One of the most common questions I receive after people begin learning about Rinaanubandh is this — “Dr. Monica, if every soul carries karmic bonds from previous lifetimes, does that mean every single relationship in my life is karmic? Is my postman carrying a karmic account with me? Is every person I pass on the street part of my Rinaanubandh?” The question is understandable — and the answer is important, because getting this wrong leads either to the exhausting conclusion that every human interaction carries the weight of past-life obligation, or to the opposite error of dismissing genuine karmic significance in relationships that deserve conscious attention. This episode provides the complete framework for navigating this question with clarity and precision.

Welcome to Episode 18 of the Rinaanubandh Series. In Episode 13 we explored the five signs of a karmic relationship. In Episodes 14 through 17 we examined specific forms of karmic recognition — dreams, gut feeling, children’s memories, and déjà vu. Now we step back to the bigger picture — the complete framework for understanding which relationships are truly karmic, which are ordinary, and what determines the difference.

The Short Answer — No, Not Every Relationship Is Karmic

The relief in this answer is real — and intended. If every relationship in your life carried the full weight of a past-life soul contract, the karmic complexity of navigating ordinary existence would be genuinely unmanageable. Vedic philosophy is precise about this — while every soul is connected to every other soul through the broader web of consciousness, the specific, binding, personally obligating relationship called Rinaanubandh applies only to those souls with whom you share a specific outstanding account from a previous lifetime.

“न सर्वे सम्बन्धाः ऋणानुबन्धरूपाः — केचित् कर्मजाः।
केचित् धर्मजाः केचित् — प्रारब्धवशात् समागमः॥”
“Not all relationships are of the nature of karmic debt-bonds — some arise from karma, some from dharma, some from circumstance. Not every meeting carries the weight of a past-life account.” — Vedic Teaching on the Classification of Relationships

The Three Categories of Relationship — The Complete Framework

🌿 Category One Ordinary Relationships

Relationships generated by current-life circumstances — shared environments, shared activities, mutual convenience. No significant past-life account. Pleasant, functional, and impermanent. End naturally when circumstances change. No disproportionate emotional charge in either direction.

🔮 Category Two Karmic Relationships

Relationships with a specific outstanding Rinaanubandh account from previous lifetimes. Carry disproportionate emotional intensity. Show repeating patterns. Difficult to release even when circumstances change. The five signs from Episode 13 are present.

Category Three Dharmic Relationships

Relationships that arise not from outstanding debt but from shared purpose — dharma in alignment. These souls meet to fulfil a collective mission rather than to settle a personal account. Characterised by ease, shared direction, and mutual amplification of purpose.

How to Know Which Category a Relationship Falls Into

The distinction between these three categories is not always immediately obvious — but there are reliable indicators that allow you to place any significant relationship into its correct category with reasonable confidence.

1

The Proportionality Test

Ask yourself — is the emotional significance of this relationship proportionate to its actual history in this lifetime? Ordinary relationships feel proportionate — the depth of feeling corresponds to the depth of shared experience. Karmic relationships feel disproportionate — the intensity of love, pain, or obligation is significantly greater than the current life’s history between you would justify. This disproportionality is the most reliable single indicator of a karmic account operating.

2

The Release Test

How easy or difficult is it to release this relationship when the practical reasons for its continuation no longer exist? Ordinary relationships end naturally when the shared context that created them changes — when the job ends, when the neighbours move, when the school years finish. Karmic relationships persist — in thought, in emotion, in dream, in the quality of incompleteness they leave — long after the practical context has dissolved. The persistence of the connection despite the absence of current-life reasons for it is a strong karmic indicator.

3

The Pattern Test

Does this relationship exhibit a repeating pattern — the same conflict, the same dynamic, the same emotional sequence — across multiple interactions regardless of how much time has passed or how much you both consciously attempt to change? Ordinary relationships are responsive — they change as the people in them change. Karmic relationships loop — the same essential pattern recurs because the underlying karmic account has not yet been addressed. Pattern repetition is one of the clearest structural markers of Rinaanubandh.

4

The Growth Test

Has this relationship changed you fundamentally — altered the core of who you are, the way you see yourself, the capacity you have for love, boundaries, courage, or compassion — in ways that cannot be undone? Ordinary relationships contribute to your life. Karmic relationships transform the foundation of it. The irreversibility of the growth produced by a relationship is a reliable indicator of its karmic significance.

The Special Case — When Ordinary Relationships Become Karmic

One of the most important nuances of this framework is understanding that the boundary between ordinary and karmic relationships is not always fixed. Ordinary relationships can generate new Rinaanubandh within the current lifetime — when the interactions between two souls create a significant enough energetic imbalance to open a new karmic account between them.

✦   When a New Karmic Account Opens in This Lifetime

How Ordinary Becomes Karmic

Through significant giving: When one soul gives to another at profound personal cost — protecting, sacrificing, providing for another at great expense to themselves — the giving creates a Rina. The receiving soul carries an obligation of equivalent magnitude that, if not settled in this lifetime, carries forward into the next one. This is how some of your current-life relationships — including ones that began as purely circumstantial — may already be generating new karmic accounts.

Through significant harm: Equally, when one soul causes another significant harm — through deliberate betrayal, abuse of trust, or actions that fundamentally alter the trajectory of another’s life — a new Rinaanubandh is created between them regardless of whether there was a previous past-life account. The harm opens an account. The account must eventually be settled.

Through interrupted love: When two souls who had no previous Rinaanubandh develop a profound love in this lifetime that is interrupted before reaching natural completion — through death, circumstance, or choice — the incomplete love generates a new account that will draw those souls back toward each other in a future incarnation.

“Every person in your life is a soul. But not every soul in your life carries an outstanding account with you. Learn to distinguish the ones who do — because those relationships deserve a completely different quality of attention, consciousness, and healing work than ordinary ones ever will.” — Dr. Monica Agarwal

Practical Implications — How This Framework Changes Your Relationships

  • You no longer need to treat every difficult relationship as a profound karmic mission — some relationships are difficult simply because two incompatible personalities are sharing a space, and the appropriate response is practical management rather than spiritual excavation
  • You can invest your deepest healing work where it is most needed — in the relationships that carry genuine Rinaanubandh — rather than distributing your healing energy equally across all relationships regardless of their actual karmic weight
  • You can release ordinary relationships without guilt when the practical context for them changes — recognising that their natural ending is simply the completion of what they were designed to be, not a karmic failure
  • You can approach the relationships that do carry Rinaanubandh with the seriousness they deserve — understanding that what happens between you and these specific souls has implications that extend beyond this lifetime
  • You can consciously manage the karma you are generating in current-life relationships — particularly those with people who depend on you or who are vulnerable to significant harm or benefit from your choices
